Lesson 1 / The construction of a sai and how to hold the weapon
Basic lessons > Sai
In lesson one you will become familiar with the construction of the sai and learn how the weapon is properly held.
The construction of sai:
a) Monouchi (main blade)
b) Saki (tip of the main blade)
c) Yoku (side blades)
d) Tsume (the tip of the side blade)
e) Tsuka (handle)
f) Tsuka gashira (head)
g) Moto
HOLDING SAI
There are 2 basic methods of holding sai.
1. HONTE MOCHI
The main blade (monouchi) is extended outwards (as an extension of the arm). The handle (tsuka) is squeezed in the palm of your hand, the thumb presses the center of the guard (moto). This grip gives more power to the strike during kime and stabilizes the weapon during impact.
2. GYAKUTE MOCHI
The main blade (monouchi) is directed inwards along the forearm. This grip is most often used to strike and block with the forearm.
In addition to the basic ones, there are other, lesser used grips for holding the sai.
A) Handle (Tsuka) squeezed in a closed fist. Most often used to strike directly up or down.
B) Holding the main blade (monouchi). This grip is mainly used for throws and attacks on the opponent's back with the side blade tip (tsume) .
C) Covering the side blades (yoku) with the fingers. This grip is rarely used but does allow the sai to be spun around quickly.
