Today there are many stick fighting systems in existence. In this practice beginner students learn techniques from three systems: bo jutsu, hanbo jutsu and eskrima.
These techniques and combinations have been selected for their efficacy and their effective integration with the rest of this training system. Training with sticks not only offers benefits skills specific to that weapon but we also acquire skills that aid the use of knife, sai and kama. Stick training also provides a general base of self defence techniques that can be used with handheld items such as umbrellas, walking sticks or telescopic batons. Therefore, stick fighting/combat is a very important element of our exercises.
Proficiency in stick fighting also translates into the ability to perform techniques without a weapon. It improves coordination, confidence in movement and gauging distance.
The combination of all these elements in one training system allows the practitioner to evolve quickly. The many similarities between these different techniques form the basis of the day to day practice. Short metal rods, oak, rattan and light bamboo sticks are all utlised. Using weapons of various weights improves motor skills and full contact work in protectors creates good combat reflexes.
