There are many different opinions about the use of protectors. However, when you fight not only with empty hands in your training, but also use different types of weapons, safety is paramount. Training is obviously more effective if it involves as little injury as possible. Martial arts training requires physical contact and risks damage to your body.

For martial arts practitioners, injury can result in a tragic loss of training time. The student’s development is inhibited and recovery can be a slow process.

People who practice stick fighting, sai or yawara are well aware of the fact that any mistake during training can cause permanent injury or even death.

For safety reasons it is also important what weapon we choose to use in combat. In the case of full contact training with short stick or knife, we use weapons made from a variety of materials. The type of tool depends on the level of proficiency and the objective of the exercise. In advanced combat training, we use kerambit and rodokan knives as well as the yawara. The use of such a variety of combat tools increases skill in the user and allows you to better understand how dangerous a knife is in the hands of an expert.

When fighting with sai, we use two types of this weapon. The first has the traditional, circular cross-section and is mainly intended for thrusts and slashing strikes. The second has a cutting edge which significantly broadens the repertoire of techniques. Additionally, we can train for different combinations of weapons: empty hand versus knife / kerambit / Rodokan / yawara / stick. Knife vs stick. Stick vs sai. Sai vs bokken etc.

Contact exercises with so many elements are not without risk but protectors minimize the likelihood of injuries. Having previously acquired technical skills with one weapon, this technique will enable you to transfer those skills, with relative ease, to another weapon. By improving combat techniques and tactics and constantly changing the distance and dynamics of your sparring, you will develop skills impossible to acquire without contact.
